Transfer of Learning

A session can go well and still change nothing. Participants engage, the content lands, and then they return to their work and very little shifts. The Baldwin and Ford transfer model explains why that happens and what conditions actually have to be in place for learning to move from the room into the work.

Note on This Set

This set has three resources. They move from the research base through interpretation and into a practical design tool. Not every set will use every layer, and that's by design. Each one is built around what the topic actually needs.

What Makes Learning Transfer | Research
The Baldwin and Ford transfer model, adapted for professional learning contexts, and what it means for how you design.

Did Your Session Work? | Meaning
What the research actually means when you're the one who ran the session and still aren't sure anything changed.

Is Transfer Possible Here? | Practice
A starting point for thinking about what your design needs to account for before the room clears.
